Everett's Nursery Projects Part One

During my pregnancy I found it really difficult to keep up with crocheting for retail while working my day job, so I made the difficult decision to scale back Beantown Handmade. Since then I have gone into crafting retirement, but I felt with the publication of my pattern book it was a really good time to let go. I miss it all the time! However, I'm so happy to have the time to make things for my family. I wanted to share with you some of the things I've made for Everett this past year. The first is this bird mobile that my husband and I made. It is from an adorable tutorial by Spool. It's really wonderful and they also offer some great pattern pieces.

It took time to sew all the birds, but it was a great way to use up some fabric scraps I had on hand. My husband and I had fun choosing bright, high contrast patterns for baby to see. The most difficult part of this project was getting the branches (we used wooden dowels) to balance. The birds kept wanting to spin and the branches would be lopsided. After some experimentation we found that adding the bottom bird did the trick! It helped to weigh the bottom of the mobile so the rest would be more stable. The air conditioner makes this guy twirl around in his nursery and it's really fun to watch. We did however have to move it away from the crib. Everett likes it so much he doesn't sleep!

Halloween Fun

I shared these on Facebook and now I am finally getting around to posting some pictures of Everett's Halloween costume here as well! He fit right in with the pack. He was happy to keep the hat on for a few minutes outside, but he's becoming quite good at taking hats off these days! Bean will have to teach him a few things about modeling ;)

Halloween Is Coming and The Pressure Is On!

The nip in the air is reminding me that Halloween is just around the corner. Being a pretty tired and busy new mom makes picking up a cheap costume for Everett pretty tempting, but I feel some pressure to perform in the costume arena. What will Everett think looking back at his photo albums if he sees I made more elaborate costumes for his furry brother and sister than I did for him? This pumpkin hat is an old favorite and the pattern can be found in my book, Patterns for Pooches. At the very least, we will have three pumpkins in the house this Halloween!

Another Sneak Peak at the Book

Here is another sneak peak at Patterns for Pooches, my crochet and sewing pattern book now available from New Holland Press. I created this new teddy bear hat pattern just for the book. The model is the adorable Archie, sitting on his big sister's bed. He was an awfully good sport and is featured in several of the pattern photos in the book. I created this hat with an organic cotton yarn, so it was almost as soft as Archie.
