Kid's Crafts for Dogs Tutorial #2: Upcycled T Shirt Leash

Help your kids get involved with one of the most important responsibilities of pet ownership - regular exercise! This soft leash is created with recycled strips of tshirts, and will provide kids with their own shorter leash to use when walking the dog. This fabric leash is soft on smaller hands but strong enough to hold a pulling pup.

Materials:
2-3 old tshirts, cut into strips between 3 and 5 feet long
1 metal leash clip in the size of your choice - we used a 1.5" swivel clip

1. Cut the tshirts into strips using a zig zag pattern so you create one long continuous piece of fabric. Create three strips between 3-5’ depending on the size of the child and the size of your puppy.

2. Gather the strips together and tie around a door knob with a double knot, pulling each individual strip to tighten .

3. Using the door knob to hold the fabric in place, braid the three tshirt strips together.

4. When you reach the end of the braid, thread one of the strips through the metal ring on the leash loop and knot. The jersey fabric is stretchy so if you pull each individual strip tightly and double knot, it provides a very tight hold. Trim excess fabric. To further reinforce the leash you may choose to hand or machine stitch the base of the hand loop and the base of the leash loop for added strength - depends on how much of a puller your new puppy is! I found the more Bean pulled, the tighter the knots got holding the leash loop and hand loop in place.
